How many trees does it take to build a house?

How many trees it takes to build a house depends on the size,
style and finish of the house. It varies considerably.
According to the Idaho Forest Products Commission, a typical
2000 square foot house requires 26,700 board feet. An "average"
tree with a 20 inch diameter and 42 linear feet of usable wood
generates approximately 260 board feet. Doing the math indicates
about 102 trees for that house.
Other organizations in the lumber industry state different
numbers, some as low as 30 trees for a 1500 square foot house while
some state 60 trees for a 2000 square foot house.

How do you find the square footage of a house?

For a rough estimate, you could multiple the outside dimensions
Length times Width and get total sq. ft of the home. Example: A
ranch style home 50' X 30' would have 1500 sq. ft. If you wanted a
more exact measurement of total living space, then find the
dimensions of each room and multiply Length times Width again for
each room, then add the total sq. ft. for each room to get a
total.
Often, when builders refer to the square footage of a house, they
do not include the garage--even if it is attached.
Good Luck!
