It cost me $817.50 in a 97 Holden rodeo 4x4
The cost would depend on where the engine is leaking from. A leak from the main seals is far more expensive than a leak from a gasket.
You will have to replace the rear main seal. This will require that the transmission be removed.
Front (side away from transmission) is cheaper by far. Around $100.00 is my GUESS.
rear main seal
THE REAR MAIN SEAL HAS GONE BAD. THE PART COST UNDER $5.00 BUT TO HAVE IT DONE IS OVER $200.00
If it's as simple as a single leak or a bit of corroded pipe, it's easy to cut out the damaged part and replace with 1" pex and 2 unions. -Hardest part is finding the leak.
Was just quoted $1600 on my 2001 Highlander Limited. I have over 200,000 miles on it, not sure the car is worth that much.
DIY: $20.00 (for the rear main seal) plus your time Mechanic: Depends on the mechanic/shop but will likely run you around $300.00
They don't make anything Liquid in a can that will FIX a rear main seal leak. Time to replace the seal and be done with it.
It depends on the seriousness of the leak. Basically, if you car is not in top condition/repair you should not drive it.
Depends on where the leak is falling from it could be the rear main seal leak, transmission back part connected to the transfer case, or a front main seal leak, the transmission part connected to the engine block also a possiblity is the shifter gear box if you have a standard, which also be in the front near the front main seal.
Overheating can damage any seal.
