I replaced the fuel filter in a 94 Chevy Silverado a couple months back and the cost of the fuel pump assembly was kinda expensive but I found out you can buy just the pump and the socks or filters by themselves separately from local chain auto parts stores fairly cheap. Stay away from the dealer if possible of course!!!
The tank has to be removed from the truck to gain access to the fuel pump assembly since it is in the tank. This is a minor task as long as the tank is almost empty, due to the weight. I am a experienced mechanic and did it in about a hour and 15 to 30, which included the time, 15 to 20 minutes, to replace the pump and socks from the assembly that was in the truck.
Not a big deal really.
