Start out with 4 QTS. Then start engine and shift the transmission through all the gears 2 or 3 times. Then put it back in park and let engine get warm and then check the fluid level. Add fluid as needed a little at a time till full.

NO, not even close. In late 1999 Chevy redesigned the transmission and the engines in all there trucks. You will need to put the 4L60E back in it, I believe late 92 to 1995 transmissions will all work in the 94 model.
No. The bellhousing on those two years are different. They will not interchange. but yet they are both a 4L60E transmission. The 96 MUST have a 1996 model 4L60E put back in it.
