A prime pullet in healthy egg laying condition will eat 3.5 to 5 ounces of feed per day. There will be some loss to scratching and the hen, if free range will seek out other sources of food which could reduce its intake. They will eat vegetation and bugs they find in the farmyard.
No, chickens have much different nutritional needs from regular birds.
Chickens cannot vomit - however, if you give a chicken too much cat food, it will make them sick.
Swamp food.
They hit it with a boner.
No Some farmers believe this will induce the hens to lay better but this is an unproven farmers myth. While the red pepper flakes won't hurt the hens it will not do much for the hen as they do not have the same effect on hens as they do on humans.
Bread is fine for hens, but whole wheat is much better.
On many family farms the hens that are too old to lay eggs are used for food. Hens can lay eggs for years but after the third year most slow down so much that they are worth more to the family farm as food rather than continue feeding them. Hens at the large egg producing companies are sold off as meat birds just after they reach 2 years old. Here at Jadeacres we allow our hens to retire in comfort. We eat chicken, but not our own. Many of our original hens are still with us, even those who have not produced an egg for years.
Yes most hens require mineral to form an adequate shell for the egg. If they don't have enough calcium the shell is thin and easily broken. If they get too much calcium though the shell can become too thick and the chicks can have a difficult time to hatch.

Hens do not need grass to lay eggs if their food contains all the nutrients they need, but they do enjoy eating it!
You should feed your hen layer pellets, scarps (such as potatos, bannanas, apples, waffles, soft chips, pizza or any vegetables etc..) You can also give your hen poridge or bread too. (be careful not to give your hen to much bread!, it can fatten it and effect your hens heart!.)
Hens must have a place where they can get in from inclement weather. They need nest boxes or straw to make nests. They must also have adequate food and water.
