the dog should eat regularly, at least 3 times a day. try breaking up milk and eggshells in the food. Gross I know but it will keep your dog healthy. Do this once a week, to make sure you dog gets all the vitamins he needs.

Large dogs, such as Golden retrievers and Labradors, do well on the twice-a-day schedule. Giant dogs, such as Great Danes and Saint Bernards, may need to be fed three times a day, getting a third of their daily ration for each meal. Avoid feeding your dog just once a day, as this could lead to digestive problems, or even a potentially lethal condition called bloat.
Many large breeds require 2 cups of dry kibble per day, but this regime can vary, depending on your pet's metabolism, her general health and how much exercise she receives. Ask your veterinarian to help you determine how much to feed your dog every day, especially if it's a puppy. Pregnant or lactating dogs need two to three times their normal food allotment, and young puppies need to be fed five or six times a day.
Another good general rule is to feed your dog the best food you can afford. There are solid arguments to be made for feeding commercial food and for feeding raw or human-grade food. Let's say you want to feed your dog dry kibble. It is best to avoid the brands sold in supermarkets, as these foods are often of inferior quality and contain cheap "filler" ingredients such as corn, wheat and soy, which dogs cannot digest well. Do some research and discover what brands of commercial dog food are considered the safest and healthiest. Some dogs may need a special diet depending on their age, size, breed and medical conditions.
Before you start feeding a particular type of food, check with your veterinarian to make sure that it is appropriate for your pet.
