The original ARPANET ran at just a few bytes per second over phone lines between universities and government research facilities. Through the mid 1990's as ARPANET was being turned over to commercial use and becoming the internet we know today, the technology advanced to where modem speeds reached 28k and the backbone was carried on 1.5m T-1 lines. Now, residential broadband connctions are capable of that same 1.5m speed and the backbone is carried almost entirely on fiber optic lines capable of over a gigabyte per second. So, in 20 years, the speed has multiplied to about a million times of the original.
