July 24, 2009 The 1943 Lincoln Cent was the only US cent that contained no copper. Because copper is a vital war material, it was removed from the cent in 1943 during WW2 and the coins were made of steel with a zinc plating. The 1943-P cent was minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Steel cents are plentiful and in circulated condition they are valued from about 3 cents to 40 cents depending upon the actual condition of the coin. The values for this coin in uncirculated grades can be seen in the chart below. Steel cents were subject to rusting and the higher uncirculated grades are less common. Unless it is in really, really, really unused condition, it is worth 1 cent. Maybe 10-15 cents in uncirculated condition. There are too many of them out there to be worth very much!
