First, the coin has a pure Golf content of about a quarter ounce. If it were to be sold for scrap gold price only (damaged or very worn and scratched), it should bring approx. 1/4 the price of a troy ounce of gold, whatever that price is at the time (which typically changes marginally across each day). If gold is selling for $1600, for example, the coin would be valued at around $380. However, most of these coins have seen very limited or even no public circulation over the years, such that the condition of the coin becomes the value basis. If the ribbon with the motto In God We Trust above the eagle on the back (reverse) of the coin is sharp and easily read, the coin is probably in what is called "very fine" condition (VF) and is valued at about $475. As the coin's condition improves, the value increase in small increments (e.g., even if rated as "Uncirculated," which means it has no trace of wear with light blemishes), the value moves up to about $575. The value jumps to approx. $900 if the condition is quite good (has some of its original luster (shine) with a few contact marks. This condition is rarely found. In 1905, only 108 $5 gold pieces (Half-Eagles) of "proof" quality were struck at the Philadelphia mint. These are coins made as "presentation" pieces, souvenirs, exhibitions, or numismatic purposes (i.e., for noted coin collectors with particular connections to mint officials or others of high office). They are extremely brilliant, almost mirror-like coins, with very sharp details. Their current worth is about $12,000, but don't expect to find one.
You possess a Coronet Head $5 Half Eagle. A 1905 coin in fine condition (F12) is worth: $250.
If it is a US ten dollar coin, it is worth at least 800 dollars, and maybe more, depending on the condition and the mint information.
twenty dollars
Please check the coin again and post new question, no one dollar US gold coins were made after 1889.
I hope you know the coin is not gold, just gold colored. Unless it's a proof coin it's only worth a dollar.
