How much is it to ride the NY subway?

Currently (as of March 3, 2013), it costs $2.75 for a single ride ticket, and $2.50 per ride for a pay-per-ride Metrocard.

There is now a $1 fee for purchasing a new pay-per-ride (plastic) Metrocard, so always refill cards whenever possible. You are exempted from the $1 fee if your Metrocard is expiring or damaged.

The same Metrocards are used for the city buses. Pay-per-ride Metrocards give you a free transfer between the subway and bus, or between buses.

You can also purchase Unlimited Metrocards, which give you an unlimited number of rides for a flat fee. There is a 30-day Unlimited card ($112), and a 7-day Unlimited card ($30).

Keep in mind that Unlimited cards will not work again for 5 minutes after they are swiped. This is to deter people from using one card for multiple people. You can still use the Unlimited cards for multiple people, but you must be prepared to wait 5 minutes after each swipe.

The fare per ride is different if you buy one of the Unlimited Metrocards. For example, a 30-day Unlimited card is $104. If you take the subway or bus twice a day, 5 days a week (40 rides a month) it would be $2.60 per ride. In this case, the pay-per-ride Metrocard would be a better deal.

If you buy the 30-day Unlimited card, and you ride the subway or bus 3 times a day, 5 days a week (60 rides a month) it would be $1.73 per ride. If you buy a 30-day Unlimited and you ride the subway or bus 4 times a day, 5 days a week (80 rides a month) it would be $1.30 per ride.

If you buy the 30-day Unlimited card and you ride the subway or bus twice a day, 7 days a week (56 rides a month), it would be $1.86 per ride. If you ride 3 times a day, 7 days a week (84 rides a month), it would be $1.24 per ride.

There is also a 7-day Unlimited card. Unfortunately, the Unlimited cards do not work after midnight, so if you do a lot of late-night travel, you're better off with the pay-per-ride card.

The 14-day Pass and the 1-day "Fun Pass" have been discontinued as of December 30, 2010.
