The salary of a shipmaster varies by the flag state, the size of the vessel, the complexity of the vessel, the operational range of the vessel and the type of vessel. A vessel registered in Panama of fairly small size running in the Caribbean Sea or the north coast of South America with a small group of officers and crew carrying generalized dry cargo would not pay a great deal. A complex liquified natural gas carrier of large size running from the Mediterranean Sea to northern Europe with a technically well-trained set of officers and ratings registered in the UK or one of its captive flags would be fairly well paid. For the larger ships pay ranges from USD75K to USD250K with pensions and other benefits as well as bonuses.
