Many people do not know this, but Turkmenistan is heavily influenced by religion.
Formerly being controlled by the Soviet Union, many of the communistic views remain in their government. Religious Literature is forbidden in Turkmenistan. Islam was extremely hurt during communism, but is now gaining influence. Freedom of religion is "guaranteed" but is limited only to Sunni Islam and Eastern Orthodoxy. You would be expelled, if, as a foreigner, you visited and were suspected of religious activity.
Muslims make up 91.84% of the populations, Christians 2.66%.
Many Christians are heavily persecuted in Turkmenistan, Pastors are jailed, Bibles are burned, Christians are tortured.
