If this is for a 4th of July barbecue, then an average order of 2 people per pound of beef ( that would be 2 quarter-pound Hamburgers or one 8-ounce steak per person) or two people per chicken (one half of a chicken per person), plus side dishes like beans or macaroni salad or something similar.
For something like a spaghetti dinner, a quarter-pound of ground beef (per person) in the sauce would be plenty.
