Like most other services, insurance companies pay a discounted price for medications. Let's say the drug has a 'retail' cost of $100. You walk in with your Rx card from the carrier and pay a $30 co-pay. The insurance company does NOT pay the $70 difference. They pay much less.
BTW - generic drugs are a big money maker. Very often you will see a $10 or $15 co-pay for a geneic drug. Literally hundreds of those drugs cost only $3-$4. Your co-pay represents big profits!
