What were the causes of the Christchurch earthquake?

The September earthquake in Christchurch occurred as a result of movement between the Australian and Pacific Tectonic Plates. The movement of which affects the NZ Southern Alps. It is usual for these plates to move up to 4cms annually, however, the September quake was believed to have seen movement of up to 5meters. The earthquake that occurred on the 22nd February was one of the many aftershocks as a result of the September quake, however, the reason that the February earthquake was so much more violent and caused fatalities, was because of the aftershock was incredibly shallow and closer to the CBD than the original September quake.

Can you increase melanin without sunlight?

You can't increase the amount of melanin in your skin. It's just that more melanin is seen on your skin when you're in the sunlight to protect it.

Does the shape of the earthquake focus pattern support the theory of plate tectonics?

Earthquakes are most common above boundaries between the tectonic plates. If a map is taken and then earthquake patterns marked on it, the clear shapes of the tectonic plates can be seen, out lined by the earthquake markers. (the clear shapes of the tectonic plates...that's actually kind of a cool rhyme...)

Does the earth open up during an earthquake?

Yes, but not the yawning chasms seen in movies. The shifting of adjacent rock structures causes earthquakes, and when they slide the rocks don't line up anymore, leaving jagged openings that are sometimes very deep. But they are rarely wide enough to fall into, which is much more a threat in ice crevasses than in rocks.

The point along a fault at which the first motion of an earthquake occurs?

The epicenter is the point where motion begins on a fault line in the event of an earthquake. This location is seen as the origin of the earthquake itself and can help determine how much damage has been done in different areas.

What happens if 2 light waves with the same amplitude interfere?

Their amplitude is not the important variable - their frequency is . If two light waves of the same frequency interact, then an interference pattern will be seen. This is the basis of the 'double slit' experiment designed to demonstrate that light may be considered to indeed be waves.
