briggs doesn't offer compression ratings for their engines. I will usually pull it 3 to 5 times and look for 90 to 120. anything less is a problem and if it doesn't hold compression there is a problem

I'm doing this now. i drilled through the rivets. started with an 1/8th drill bit and a little oil on top of the rivet. the problem is going to be finding replacement screws that will hold the starter cage once you have replaced the cord. some Briggs and stratton engineer needs to be taken to the wood shed.
48 ounces without filter change. 52 ounces with filter change. Do not overfill. I recommend you use Synthetic oil in any air cooled engine.

For most Briggs and Stratton engines the charging system is under the flywheel. You will have to remove all the shields that cover the top of the engine and the flywheel and then remove the flywheel itself. Once the flywheel is off the stator is exposed. Depending on what model you have there will be a series of screws that hold it to the block. Just unplug the wire connector and remove the screws and it will come off with a little wiggling. Make sure that all the magnets on the bottom side of the flywheel are in place and secure or replacing the stator will not do you any good.
Assuming it is a Briggs & Stratton GenTec Pro Intek V-Twin & ELS it will take 60 ounces + 4 more ounces if you also change the filter.
Spin the engine until the two legs of the coil lines up with the magnet on the flywheel. Place a standard business card between the the flywheel and coil and let the magnet hold it in place between the two pieces. Tighten the bolts down. Spin the engine and get the business card out and you're ready to go.
