The Cummins N14 engines could be had in horsepower ratings from 310 to 525 horsepower. The red top engines were those rated at 435 horsepower or higher.
i have a n14 sss sr20de all i do is open bonnet right side of engine should see gearbox on top there is cable hooked onto clutch fork. were it hooks on to the fork thers like a bottle top screw u srew it towards the fire wall to tighten and towards front of car to loosen hope this helps

So long as it's been maintained properly, the N14 was a very solid motor - but the N14 (and pretty much any Cummins motor) are a nuisance to work on. You may want to consider a newer model N14, if the option is available to you. In 1990, the electronic controls were very rudimentary, and the later models, with updated electronics, tended to be considerably more efficient. This is especially important if you're going to be coupling it to an electronically controlled automatic transmission.
The N14 has an automatic tensioner. Either your tensioner or your belts are in need of replacement.
