Burning coal is a leading cause of smog, acid rain, global warming, and air toxics. In an average year, a typical coal plant generates:

  • 3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary human cause of global warming--as much carbon dioxide as cutting down 161 million trees.
  • 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which causes acid rain that damages forests, lakes, and buildings, and forms small airborne particles that can penetrate deep into lungs.
  • 500 tons of small airborne particles, which can cause chronic bronchitis, aggravated Asthma, and premature death, as well as haze obstructing visibility.
  • 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx), as much as would be emitted by half a million late-model cars. NOx leads to formation of ozone (smog) which inflames the lungs, burning through lung tissue making people more susceptible to respiratory illness.
  • 720 tons of carbon monoxide (CO), which causes headaches and place additional stress on people with Heart disease.
  • 220 tons of hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOC), which form ozone.
  • 170 pounds of Mercury, where just 1/70th of a teaspoon deposited on a 25-acre lake can make the fish unsafe to eat.
  • 225 pounds of arsenic, which will cause cancer in one out of 100 people who drink water containing 50 parts per billion.
  • 114 pounds of lead, 4 pounds of cadmium, other toxic heavy metals, and trace amounts of uranium.

CO2, SO2, NOx, uranium oxides, etc. go up the stack.

Clinker and ash remain in the fire box and have to be removed and disposed of.

Tens of times as many tons as any nuclear plant.

Do geothermal power stations make pollution?

No. Construction equipment used to build the station will burn fossil fuels and produce some pollution. When the station is complete it will produce pollution free electricity. The station will require some electric power from the grid to operate, and some of that electricity may be produced by coal powered plants which do produce pollution, but the geothermal power station will not produce pollution.

How is coal used in a power station?

the coal is crushed first then the coal is passed for burning

what are energy transformations in a coal fired power station?

Coal is burned to produce heat, which then is transferred to water/steam, which produces mechanical power in the steam turbine, which produces electrical power from the generator

How does a coal fired power station produce electricity?

A coal fired station burns coal to produce heat. The heat boils water to produce high pressure and temperature steam. The steam expands in a turbine to rotate the shaft. The turbines rotation drives a generator. The generator produces electricity which is sent out to the consumers.

The huntly power station uses gas and to produce electrcity?

It used to use coal. I don't think it has been converted to gas powered but not sure on that.

What produces cheaper electricity- a coal burning station or a nuclear power station?

How could power stations reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they produce?

There are many ways to generate electricity. Methods that burn fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) produce carbon dioxide. Methods using renewable energy do not. Nuclear power plants, although uranium in non-renewable, do not produce carbon dioxide. Power stations could be rebuilt to use different fuel sources. Biomass and biofuel will power a coal fired power station without emitting the carbon dioxide pollution.
