The cost of Transmission Fluid and filter will depend on the make of the car. It will also depend on the labor costs if a person has it done at an automobile repair shop. The fluid is about $5 a quart and the filter with the gasket might cost between $15 and $45. Many vehicles take about 10 quarts or more of transmission fluid.
I am assuming you have an automatic transmission, because the manual transaxle does not have a filter. It is located under the transmission pan and should cost about $40 plus a new gasket and labor if you have someone do it for you.
Auto shop wanted to charge me $135.00 , I went to Auto Zone and bought the filter, 6 quarts of transmission fluid, and replaced myself same time with the engine oil, replacing engine oil cost me $22.00 (special filter-$11.99), and transmission cost me $35.00.
Weak transmission fluid pressure. The fluid goes bad after many miles of use. Have the transmission fluid and filter replaced (about $100) immediately before the transmission goes bad. A transmission for that car cost more than the car is worth.
1st step would be to change the transmission fluid and filter (if so equipped). may save you the cost of a rebuild.

Low fluid, clogged filter, transmission fluid needs changing, or damaged gears in the transmission. First, I would check to see if the fluid is low. If the fluid level was acceptable, I would take the car to a reputible transmission shop and ask for a fluid and filter change. It should cost around $80. Usually, this will correct your issues because they will drain the fluid, replace the fluid and the filter. If this doesn't correct your problem, begin crying because your transmission is probably damaged. Please don't tell a mechanic you think the tranny is damaged because you could possibly be charged $600 for an $80 job. Shop around and make wise decisions. Provide more info if you can also.
There is no sure fire way to know if the filter is plugged. When I say to a costumer, we need to service the transmission fluid and filter.. This is a decision made on the miles on vehicle, the last time it was serviced, color and smell of the fluid. In my opinion the filter and fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles. The cost is about 130.00. This is cheap insurance on a 2000$ transmission. As the transmission clutches wear, the very small particles from the friction discs start to plug the filter. You may also want to open the filter up and see with your own eyes the amount of debris in it. By the way, I drive the same truck..........
You'll have to drop the transmission pan. Make sure you have a large container to catch the transmission fluid. In my opinion, it would be better to take it to a shop. If you go there with the understanding that a transmission shop will probably try to sell you a transmission rebuild, you should be ready to say no. Most likely they will point to a little bit of metal shavings in the bottom of the pan and tell you that it means your transmission is about to fail. Just have them change the fluid and filter. It doesn't really cost much more than doing it yourself and if you can say no.
Change it around 70,000 miles or 135,000km. It will usually cost at the dealer around 150-300 depending on how much they charge for the fluid.
There are two methods: 1) Jiffy Lube and other quick lube shops use a transmission fluid exchange machine. It is done while the engine is running in order to exchange old fluid from the torque converter. The filter and gasket are not changed in this procedure. Cost - about $90 2) You can drop the pan and let the fluid drain. This method allows changing the filter but there is a small amount of used fluid left in the torque converter. Cost - around $20
Something inside the transmission is slipping. To try to avoid the cost of a transmission overhaul try having the transmission fluid and filter changed. You could also try some transmission additive but eventually it will have to be repaired.
Just a straight fluid change done by a shop should run you around 75 to 125
