The average is 8 hours, some people require 10 hours and there is approximately 35% that only need six hours (I'm one of those people.) It depends if you have REM sleep (deep sleep) and if you do then even six hours is enough for many people. If you are a lighter sleeper then 8 - 10 hours is a must. Children from 1-19 need at least 10 hours of sleep each day.
