Lincoln's ambassador in London was a particularly talented man, C.F. Adams (of the Presidential family), and he did much to keep the British from sending aid to the Confederates. Davis's envoys to London and Paris (Mason and Slidell) did not do such a good job.
No - most of the SOUTH was
The South didn't have much industry, it was mainly a farming area. Their main export was cotton, I believe another top export was tobacco. The South didn't farm very much food, and with little industry they didn't have basic supplies like shoes. So the South needed to keep their ports open so they could receive food, shoes, and other important supplies. As a side note: The North did a pretty good job of blocking off Southern ports so the South experienced much hardship during the war.
Since the South had very little manufacturing capacity, the blockade and capture of Southern ports deprived the South of much needed supplies.
The North's greatest strength or resource during the Civil War was its industry.
Having to recruit from a much smaller population. Success of the Union naval blockade.
The Confederates needed blockade-runners to bring in much-needed war supplies.
To prevent them from exporting their plentiful cotton in exchange for much-needed war supplies.
whiskey... doctors had barley any supplies so they used whiskey to get them drunk during an operation, like amputations, so they wouldn't feel as much pain
Absence of these major Union advantages: Much bigger population from which to recruit armies. Traditional advantage in artillery, including new rifled cannon Industrial capability - access to all kinds of war-supplies More railroad mileage - whole armies could move by train Big enough navy to attempt a blockade of Southern coasts.
