A man has to have accomplished SOMETHING to be knighted. Hillary was, among other achievements, the first (known, white) man to climb Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth. (Please note; others may have done it before, but we don't know who, or if. And his Sherpa guides probably deserve as much credit as he did, or more. )
