The year, make and front or rear wheel bearings info would help.
front or rear wheel drive?
The wheel bearings are not really replaceable by themselves. This is because they are integrated into the hub assembly. So the answer is that you will have to replace the entire hub assembly to replace the bearings.
This is a very hard job without the proper equipment. Not recommended for the novice. It will also depend which bearings you are asking about, front or back. Both equally hard to do.
You replace it as part of the rear disc assembly. Remove rear wheel and hub nut cover undo hub nut, then remove the rear caliper and pull the disc off the stub axle.
Remove the tire and wheel from your 1997 Chevy Astro. Remove the axle end. Remove the wheel bearing nut. Remove the wheel bearing and the wheel seal. Reverse the process to install the new front wheel bearing.
if you have wiring going to a sensor near the front wheel bearings, you have four wheel abs.if you have wiring going to a sensor near the front wheel bearings, you have four wheel abs.
front hub removal dispatch
Hi, On almost ALL of the GM vehicles since the mid 90s that have integrated wheel speed sensors (for anti-lock brakes), the wheel bearings can not be replaced by themselves. You will have to get the entire hub assembly replaced it the bearings are showing signs of wear (such as high-speed vibrations or noises). Sorry about that. Good Luck
The bearings run in the differential grease fed through the axle housing.
what you are looking for is a "wheel bearing". it is part of the suspension for your van. it allows the wheels to rotate freely as well as supporting your van. there is a wheel bearing for each wheel. if your mechanic is telling you itis time to replace them you may want to concider doing it. the extreme result for not doing it is your wheel may fall off your car. For more information on wheel bearings, go to wiki encylopedia and look up "wheel bearing."
Check your wheel bearings. My van sounded like a motorboat and I have to have the wheel bearings changed. The exhaust system may be at fault also.
Hi,The wheel bearings are indeed sealed. But a more correct term might be "integrated", as the wheel bearings are part of the hub assembly on these vehicles, and many other GM vehicles. The Hub/Wheel Bearing assemblies also include the wheel speed sensors, which are used to help control the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and traction control.Take Care, Greg
