It depends on the state. Florida was the first state to adopt the poll tax in 1889, and other southern states subsequently followed. Poll taxes, coupled with literacy tests, were measures used to prevent those with low income from voting, as well as African Americans, Native Americans, and immigrants.

The only source I can find with an exact number is on Wikipedia, where there is a picture of a check made in the year of 1917 for one dollar to the state of Louisiana as payment of a poll tax. Keep in mind, however, that a dollar back in those days was worth a lot more to the people than it is today, especially those who were in poor financial situations.
