Calrose rice came to life out of a rice experiment and was released to growers in 1948. The name Calrose comes from two ideas. The Cal was for California where the original experiments were created and the 'rose' indicates medium-grain shape. Calrose rice has gone through a lot of changes and experiments through the years and the original grain does not exist today.

What we have today is a grain that is referred to as sticky rice and is used in Sushi. Everywhere I have looked on the internet and how I cook Calrose rice is one cup of rice per 1 ¾ cup water. This works also for the rice cooker.

Do you just rice and water and turn on rice cooker?

Yep. Pretty much. My rule is to fill up the rice cooker with rice, then add enough water to cover the first joint of your index finger. My SO thinks that produces rice that's too dry. YMMV.

How do you cook homemade Spanish rice?

Homemade Spanish rice is cooked depending on the variety of rice you choose. If you use the Rice cooker there are recipe books that come with the rice cooker. If you use white rice it is 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice. Using other varieties of rice will change the water and time permitted to cook the rice. There are certain types of rice you do not want to use for making Spanish rice. Do not use calrose rice because it is also called 'sticky rice' and is used for Sushi. Using the rice cooker you can add ingredients to the rice and cook it in the rice cooker. If you use the saucepan to cook the rice you will usually cook the rice separate. If you purchase a Spanish rice package from the store the rice is cooked in 2 cups of water and in the saucepan for 20 minute's.

How does a rice cooker know when to stop?

A rice cooker has a thermostat that turns off when the temperature reaches 100C, the boiling point of water. So the rice continues to cook until all the water is absorbed by the rice or boiled away. Then it turns off. The trick is to to have just the right amount of water so your rice is perfectly cooked. A: Mine didn't know when to stop and burned the rice every time. I now use my rice cooker solely as a vegetable steamer.

Why does rice cooked in the rice cooker spoils?

Rice doesn't spoil until it has grown mold or bacteria in it. If you mean to say overcooking, then it is either due to too much water in the rice, or too long of cooking time.

How do you make steamed rice?

Koreans typically use a rice cooker which works great. It can cook a potfull of rice in less than thirty minutes and can be bought at a local Asian store. Start by putting some rice in the pot and washing it three times with water. Drain the water then fill the pot with a fresh set of water that fits the amount used for how much rice you put (if you cook some measures of rice with too much water it'll be too wet and watery, cook it with not enough water will lead to dryer rice)...next place, the pot, which now consists of rice and water, in the rice cooker and press "cook". Once done cooking, the cooker will automatically switch to "warm", which means it stops cooking but just keeps the rice warm. open the cooker and stir the rice...this prevents it from getting sticky and becoming a glob instead of fluffy.. you don't have to eat all the rice in the pot in one day...it wont' spoil...rice in the pot kept at "warm" can last two to three days...good luck :)

Function of rice cooker?

It detects that the water has boiled off. There is a temperature sensor set just above the boiling point of water. If there is water still present, it doesn't allow the temperature to go over the boiling point.
