Good Question? Well there are many different sizes of pools. You can find the volume of one by Multiplying the Length X Width X Depth . Say a pool that is 10ft x 20ft x 8ft = 1600ft3 There is 7.4805 Gallons per cubit foot. Therefore this pool would be 11,969 gallons.

It depends how deep the water is! but the formula is Pi X (r squared) X H H = Depth of water r = Radius of the pool (= 1/2 the diameter) Pi = 3.14159........ 21 Feet is 6.4 Metres, so r = 3.2 Metres Assuming H = 4 feet (1.2 Metres), we get Pi X (3.2 X 3.2) X 1.2 = Pi X 10.24 X 1.2 = Pi X 12.288 = 38.6 cubic metres. There are 1000 litres in a cubic metre, so the pool holds 38,600 litres of water There are 4.54 litres to an Imperial Gallon, so that's 8503 Imperial Gallons. A US Gallon is is 4/5 of an Imperial gallon, so that's 10,629 US Gallons

Is draining all but a foot or so of water out of an above ground pool through winter a bad idea even when you live in the South and don't have to worry much about freezing?

Doesn't some amount of water help hold the pools shape so it doesn't colapse? I had an upbove ground pool that we left a little water in for the winter so it wouldn't fall down w/the winter storms. They sure are not fun to clean in the spring though. It depends on the ground water level. If your ground water is high enough to float the pool, it's a bad idea. If ground water is high the pool needs the weight of the water to keep it from being damaged. If ground water is low, it doesn't really matter.
