Tokyo is much larger than you think.

The Tokyo you may know is only a quarter of the whole Tokyo, which is a prefecture, or for comparison's sake, like a state. Living in the 23 wards that make up metropolitan Tokyo is pretty expensive, especially if you buy land and a house. Apartments and Mansions are common in the metropolitan.

Outside of the 23 wards it is much cheaper, and there is less people, so there are more houses.

Basically the closer you get to the center of the Tokyo most people know it as, the more expensive the land gets. I forgot the exact numbers, but the most expensive for one square meter costs more than US$1000!

Tokyo hotels come in a wide range of prices. At the top of the line the 5 star hotels are very expensive compared with other cities. At the cheap hotel end they are not too expensive, although the room will be small (there isn't much room in Tokyo!). Average price AUD $53 - $91. It depends all on where you stay. I was there for 2 nights, stayed in Narita (town where airport is) We only had a stop over there on the way to LA. We stayed at Holiday Inn. For a family of 4 we payed a total of $250 for both nights. It was a clean and comfortable stay, nothing more. from Narita its about a 1-2 hour train ride but the train ride is an AMAZING culture shock.
