I just got an estimate for $1500 from a pretty reputable garage for my '91 VW Jetta. Apparently, the parts are not what makes the repair expensive - it's a pretty labor-intensive thing.
I had a friend rebuild it for the cost of the rebuild kit (about $75.00) and some reciprocal labor on my part, but it's still overheating.
He thinks the head might be warped and need to be machined - something that he can't do n his backyard garage.

A Volkswagen Jetta radiator fan is controlled by a fan relay. If the relay malfunctions the fan could either stay on or not work at all. An engine diagnostic would be recommended.
If this is a nice car then spend the money and have the blown head gasket repaired before you try to sell it. With a blown head gasket it is only worth what someone will pay. Would you buy a car with a blown head gasket? I sure would not, as there is no way of knowing how much damage has been done. I would not touch this car as it stands now and neither will most people. It is worth very little with the gasket blown.
