Got a quote from Honda dealer in Germantown MD for $4500 (August 2009). Suburbantransmissions.com quoted about $3200
Likely your transmission is dying. Google "odyssey transmission" and you will find lots of reports about problems with 2000- 2004 Odyssey transmissions. If you are persistent enough, Honda might help some with the repair.
According to NRMA Car Review - Honda Odyssey 1995 1200 kg You would probably want to put a transmission cooler in to tow that sort of load though.
It indicates transmissions problems. Had this happen at 103,000 km on our 2002 Honday Odyssey and had to replace the entire transmission.
Honda recommends changing it at 100,000 miles. I personally recommend you change it every 75,000 miles. The 2003 Honda Accord had problems with the transmission so I would recommend this as a preventative measure.
P1717 is a code for an electrical malfunction in the transmission range switch most likely it would not be connected all the way in . Troubleshooting says , adjust the cable .
Honda Automatic transmissions use an internal filter that is designed for the life of the transmission. It is extremely rare that one would have to be changed. Also do not do a power flush on a Honda transmission as it will ruin the internal seals.
Odyssey is a model of vehicle. The make of the vehicle would be Honda. So all odyssey cars are made by Honda. They are primarily vans and suv type cars.
Normally towing should not induce any extra wear on your vehicle, in some cases a transmission cooler is recommended to keep the transmission fluid at an appropriate temperature. However, the Honda Odyssey has many recorded problems with the transmission failing early. Some are fortunate enough to have it fail withing warranty, I have a friend who is on his third transmission in under 120k miles. So I would not recomend towing with your Odyssey. Adding extra weight for your van to tow will shorten the life of your transmission even further on this particular vehicle. A quick search on the problems of the transmission on this vehicle, including a class action lawsuit for certain years that extended the warranty.
It is never a bad idea to change transmission fluid. However I would recommend you change it every 75,000 miles. This is sufficient on any vehicle.
Incorrect ignition timing or damaged valves would make a 95 Honda Odyssey sputter and backfire. Backfires are directly caused when ignition occurs at the wrong time.
A 2003 Honda Odyssey would require just a standard headlight bulb as a replacement. These can be brought from many stores, such as Autozone and even Walmart.
Yes, that is possible. But you would need a donor car in order to have all the parts necessary. Otherwise the cost of doing this would be astronomical. My advice is to sell the Honda with an automatic transmission and buy a Honda with a manual transmission.
