Note: There was no full automatic for the Ghia, but they did have an Autostick which is kind of a hybrid. You basically left the shifter in the first position for city and the second position for highway, and there was also a seldom-used "low" for very steep hills or trailer towing starts. It had an automatic clutch which operated by itself the moment you placed your hand on the lever (no clutch pedal!), and a torque converter so you could stop with the car in gear. Pretty trick engineering for the day, but it's hard to find a mechanic who understands them nowadays.
For conversion you will ned the autostick transmission, torque converter, control solenoid, autostick pedal cluster, vaccum port on the carb, fluid tank, and the special autostick-only oil pump which is a dual pump for engine oil and Transmission Fluid. You should be able to purchase all the parts from someone who has converted from AS to manual, which is a more common conversion.
To find a doner vehicle would be best, like from a auto wrecking yard. This would give you everything you would need to swap over. If you have to pay someone to do this job it would be in your best interest to sell your vehicle then purchase another that was automatic from the factory.
Sure! But it would probably be cheaper to buy another car.
Why the hell would you want to?
You could, but it would be easier and cheaper to buy a manual truck.
That really just depends on the car and if it's a 4,5,or a 6 speed.
Yes you can, but generally the differences between manual and automatic transmissions go far deeper than just the transmissions to the point where it would be more cost effective to simply sell your current car and buy a manual one.
Yes, by removing the manual transmission and installing an automatic. Unless you have a donor car this would be extremely expensive. My advice is that if you want an A/T sell the car you have and then buy one with an automatic.
You cannot convert an automatic transmission to a manual one, but you can replace the automatic with a manual. It is a big job and if you do not do it your self would probably cost a lot more than selling the automatic truck and buying a manual truck. The manual will require different shift linkage, adding clutch pedal and parts to actuate the clutch, and you may need a drive shaft of different length. It is also common for automatics and manuals to use different rear axle ratios, and even the Electrinic Control Module and some wiring may need to be changed. Maybe that automatic is not so bad after all.
It would not likely be cost effective to convert the transmission. It would cost several thousand dollars, but it is doable.
it depends on what kind of car, how much of parts inventory you personally have, and how much work you are planning on doing.............
By selling this car and buying another one with a manual. Unless you have a donor car, with all the parts, this would be cost prohibitive.
Automatic or manual?
You would have to replace the transaxle, you would have to cut a hole in the floor for the shift column, you would have to get the engine ECM reflashed, you'd have to install a clutch pedal and all mounting hardware.
