A place called Automotive Exchange on Twain Street in San Diego (ask Google) just quoted me $85 to rebuild an alternator for my friends '93 190c, and I will have them do it, although I have done this many times in the past. They have a driver coming here anyhow and will give me free pickup of my old alternator and delivery of the repaired one about five hours later.

You could get diodes a lot cheaper and do it yourself. Diodes are often the cause of alternator problems. Use an ohmmeter (100x) to ensure each diode has high resistance in one direction and low in the other.

I would always replace both bearings, and if only one end of each bearing is sealed, install them just like they came out. The sealed end would go toward the Front of the car on both bearings. Use a bearing puller.

The carbon brushes should be 7/16" long or longer -- or need replacement. Yes, alternators have brushes.

It's not a difficult job. The same day, I was quoted $118 at Kragen for a rebuilt alternator, and that is a good price. Mercedes will charge you several times that amount to fix it, and I don't opine that their mechanics are as good as the guy who does it for a living in his garage.

Cheers!
