YES! I've had three different stylist decide without telling me to use cellophane on my hair with the same result. SEVERE breakage! I am Black and do not use relaxer at all. After the cellophane treatment, it looks as though it has been relaxed with waves instead of curls. My hair then breaks and the only thing that can be done is cutting it off and allowing new hair to grow. The first hair dresser denied that it could be the cellophane but maybe hormones. The second and third said the same thing. But why does my hair grow back and does well until the cellophane treatment is applied?
I have been a hairdresser for 13 years and I have seen that cellophane doesn't cause damage in fact it gives shine to hair. It is also used as a way treat damaged hair. Most cellophane products contain protein. The hairdresser is definitely correct. Cellophane coats the outside of the hair, causing no damage and is a great conditioning agent. It is not like dye in the sense that dye actually goes to the inside of the hair shaft.
It is not recommended to relax damaged hair because it will cause further damage. You can however cellophane your hair because most cellophane treatments contain protein and make your hair healthier.

Depending on the type of keratin treatment used, you should be able to color hair following a treatment. Keratin is the main type of protein that is found in hair. Protein is what give hair its strength, and also gives color something to bond to. It is often a good idea to do a protein treatment both before and after a coloring service to keep your hair strong and healthy and to help your color to last.
Much like professional hair color hair cellophanes are acrylic based treatments. In a cellophanes treatment small unpigmented plastic molecules are deposited into the hair to increase shine, help texture and reduce tangle. The only difference between cellophanes and hair color is the cellophanes are clear rather than having a desired color. The cellophanes dont do the slight damage color does because of no or reduced amonia content.
