I have been a hairdresser for 13 years and I have seen that cellophane doesn't cause damage in fact it gives shine to hair. It is also used as a way treat damaged hair. Most cellophane products contain protein.
The hairdresser is definitely correct. Cellophane coats the outside of the hair, causing no damage and is a great conditioning agent. It is not like dye in the sense that dye actually goes to the inside of the hair shaft.
