If you are coming for a visit, Boston does not get a lot of rain in the summer, but it will get some thundershowers now and then; how often depends on weather patterns from other parts of the country. You are more likely to see a prolonged rainy period in March or April than during the summer. For the most part, the climate tends to be comparatively moderate during the summer: the extremes of temperature you might see in other parts of the country (such as heat repeatedly between 95 and 100 degrees) do not occur here that often.

There may be a few extremely hot and humid days, but in general, the temperatures tend to be in the upper 80s during the summer, with a sea breeze along the coast. And while much of the United States is experiencing a lack of rain in 2012, Massachusetts is not going through any drought-like conditions. Of course, the state is famous for changeable weather, so it can and does get caught up in periods of rainy weather or periods of high temperatures with no rain in sight, but that does not last long. Most of the time, the climate is very comfortable.

It depends on where in Massachusetts you are, but in general, the weather in October is changing from summer (which tends to be warm, in the 80s or low 90s) to fall (which tends to be cooler (in the mid to high 50s on average). But the western part of the state (including Springfield and Pittsfield), tends to have cooler temperatures, especially at night; while the eastern part (including Boston) might still have some days in the 60s or even the low 70s, with nights in the 50s.
