If you race, have fresh gearbox oil for every event. Trail or casual riding would seem to be fine for 10hrs or every 3 to 5 rides. Oil is cheep insurance! A magnetic drain plug also seems like a great idea. Put a drop of oil on some white paper and look at it in the sun. You'll see if it's been a little to long.
