There is no set age. If you are asking for yourself, you must typically have parental permission. However, if one was living apart from their parents, and supporting themselves lawfully and provably, and had bona fide complaint with their parent's treatement of them, they could petition the court. It is rare for any under the age of 16 to succeed in emancipation, though getting yourself placed in foster care is possible at any age you can articulate it and demonstrate it's necessity.

If you are asking as a payer of child support, than know that it need not end at 18, but can continue so long as the child is still dependent on the parent being lived with. In a case of mental illness, this was held to still be true at 25.

As with any questions of law or legality, one should consult a competent attorney in your area specializing in the field of your concern. If you are a polite, and it is just one question, they will often times answer for free.
