The Sloss Furnaces in Alabama are historically significant in that they were built in 1881 by James Sloss. By 1920, the furnaces were producing up to 400 tons of steel per day. Working conditions were deplorable for those unfortunate enough to be among the 500 or so employees. Several hundred people died as a result of the dangerous conditions. The Furnaces are now a tourist attraction and are rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of those who perished.
As an iron furness, it has long been defunct. Sloss Furnace is now an historical site, and museum. On Halloween and several other occasions, there are festivals and other attractions held there.
