Around what year did people convert coal furnaces to oil?

When I was 2 years old, in 1948, my family moved into an old home in Plymouth, Michigan. It had a coal burning furnace that heated water for our steam radiators. The furnace needed to be stoked with coal and a water valve had to be opened to fill the water tank every day in the winter. In 1949 or 1950 my father had the furnace converted to oil, so we no longer had to shovel coal. However, we still had to fill the water tank manually. Our furnace conversion occurred in the late 1940's or early 1950's. I hope this answers your question. Doug Balfour

Can any use be made of old enginen oil?

Used motor oil can and should be recycled. Call your local waste management office or a garage, they will be able to tell you where to take it. There are other uses for small quantities, such as using it for chain saw bar oil and lubricating bicycle chains. Many shops and junk yards use old oil in an oil fired furnace. The way it is designed the oil burns hot enough that you don't get very much smoke from it.
