With "Smart Grid" technology, power companies are using the power grid to send/receive RF signals. These high or low frequencies co-exist with the usual 60hz being transmitted across the nation. Eventually, with the installation of 'smart meters', they can read power consumption without coming out to the site, eliminating thousands of jobs, and some suggest even turn your power on/off from a remote station. This technology also allows them to locate outages faster and identify problem locations in power transmission.
An under reported associated phenomenon is that of EMF (Electromagnetic frequency) radiation, where RF signals are leaking from the unshielded power lines causing some people to hear a constant low hum in their homes. (Google 'The Taos Hum', or "The Kokomo Hum' for more on this.)
In some areas this technology is also being used to provide WiFi or Broadband over the power lines (BPL), since it is less costly than running miles of cable to reach remote areas already served by electric lines.
