Some didn’t. The first to go were children. They died of disease and other causes. When they first landed they lived on the ship until shelters could be built.
The Wampanoag tribe played a pivotal role in the Pilgrims' survival of their first winter in the New World. Thanksgiving did not become an official American holiday until the time of the Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln thought it was a way to bring people together. The Pilgrims arrived cold and sick; many members of their group did not survive the voyage. According to a letter, hand-written by a Pilgrim named Edward Wintston, all of the Pilgrims who were present at the first Thanksgiving were survivors of the voyage on the Mayflower. Those present at the first Thanksgiving feast were 22 men, 13 children, 14 teenagers, and four married women. A total of 53 pilgrims were there. There were also some 90 Indians in attendance. Also derived from the letter is that the Indians killed 5 deer for the feast and brought them to share with the Pilgrims.
