Russia was already very unstable before WW1. During the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 foreign observers noticed with alarm that the Russian media were behaving quite 'abnormally'. They were *delighted* whenever the Russian forces were defeated and didn't like Russian victories. The British Imperial General Staff concluded that Russia was falling apart and was unlikely to be a serious, dependable ally in a future war. Some say that, with modifications, this view wasn't revised till after Stalingrad.
