A formula is an instruction in a spreadsheet to carry out some activity, normally a calculation. A formula must begin with the equals sign. Formulas can be simple or complex and they are built by the user. A function is a pre-defined formula that is built into the spreadsheet program and can be used as a formula or as part of a formula.
This is a simple formula, multiplying values in two cells by each other:
=B3*D10
The SUM function is a commonly used function. It can be used in a formula like these examples:
=SUM(A2:A14)
=SUM(A2:A14) * 12
Discrete Function - A function that is defined only for a set of numbers that can be listed, such as the set of whole numbers or the set of integers. Explicit Definition - A definition of a function by a formula in terms of the variable.
A function is a pre-written or built-in formula in Excel. There are many of them, all designed to do very specific tasks. The SUM function is one of the most common, making it easy to add a range of cells. See the related question below.
The SUBTOTAL function does not insert a row. It returns the result in the cell where you type the formula. See related links for information about the SUBTOTAL function.
Type the formula directly in the cell or the formula. Use formula AutoComplete. Select a function from the Function Library group, or click the Insert Function button to select a function from the Insert Function dialog. Use AutoSum

It's the gradient, or the steepness, of a linear function. It is represented by 'm' in the linear formula y=mx+b. To find the slope of a line, pick to points. The formula is (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). See the related link "Picture of a Linear Function for a picture of a linear function.

Nesting a function is putting one function inside another. This can be done for more complex formulas. Nesting has to be done carefully as it is easy to make mistakes and get the wrong results, or for the formula not to work at all.
"Physiology" in medical terms means related to the function of the body or its parts.
Function
A nested formula is where one or more functions are placed inside another function to make a formula. For example you can write a formula where you put an IF function within an IF function and this would be a nested formula.
