There is in reality no such thing as a "fundamental duty". A duty is something which is imposed upon you by someone else. But when another person (or a country) tells you that you must do something, that makes you a slave.

You can bet your last dollar that if someone tells you that you have an obligation to perform some kind of duty, that person is expecting to be the recipient of of the benefits of your work. In other words, it's a confidence game! They are trying to trick you into working for nothing.

A fundamental right on the other hand, is a very real thing.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are three fundamental rights written of in the Declaration of Independence. A fundamental right is something which exist by virtue of you being alive and a human being. It is not something granted to you by the government, or by any person. Fundamental rights are something you are born with and have your entire life. Both people and governments can be judged as either good or bad by whether or not they recognize and respect your fundamental human rights.

So these two things are not complementary at all, they are complete opposites. "Fundamental Rights" are basic recognition of what a human is, and the value of human life, and "Fundamental Duties" is a negation of human rights and a cheap attempt to exploit gullible people.

What is the relationship between substantive due process and fundamental rights?

Substantive due process is a constitutional doctrine that protects certain fundamental rights not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution. It recognizes that certain rights, such as privacy or autonomy, are deeply rooted in our nation's history and traditions. These fundamental rights are protected from government interference and cannot be infringed upon without a compelling state interest and a narrowly tailored means to achieve that interest.

Are human rights and fundamental rights equal?

Human rights and fundamental rights are closely related but not exactly the same. Human rights are universal rights that are inherent to all individuals by virtue of being human, whereas fundamental rights are specific rights guaranteed by laws or constitutions of a particular country. While fundamental rights may encompass some human rights, human rights are broader in scope and not limited by national borders or legal systems.

How are fundamental rights are essential?

Fundamental rights are essential because when you are deprived of those rights, you are going to be very unhappy about it (or dead). Those governments which do not respect human rights take the viewpoint that the unhappiness or death of individuals does not matter to them, since (as Napoleon said) you cannot make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. In other words, what is essential to some people may not be perceived as essential by other people. We all get to decide what is essential to us. That said, most people would very much like to enjoy certain fundamental rights. The right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as stated in the Declaration of Independence, remains as good a summary as any, of the fundamental rights that we would like to have.
