After Jesus resurrection, the followers of Jesus (including the apostles) were too scared to show themselves in public. They hid away because the people who had crucified Jesus were still around and looking for followers. At Pentecost they were filled with the Holy Spirit and were given the confidence to carry on the mission started by Jesus - the birth of Christianity. In the years to follow, the Church grew but much was done in secret to avoid persecution. Societies of the time did not accept Christianity and many found practicing Christianity were killed. This worshipping in secret is where many of the early symbols for Christ came from (such as the fish) as these were easy to draw and like codes to gather Christians together for worship. It wasn't really until the Roman Emperor Constantine, known as the first Christian Roman Emperor, was it safe to be a openly practicing Christian. He announced toleration of Christianity. Having a Christian emperor was truly a turning point for the Christian Church and helped to define the core values and beliefs (at the First Council of Nicaea, conviened by Constantine) much of which are still relevant today.

The early Christian church, as refered to in the New Testament of The Bible, refers to the people and not the buildings. The building that they met in were actually their homes which were brick and mud. When they met they would scrawl in the dirt outside of the house, the symbol of a fish. This told other believers that there was a meeting in that house. They had to do this due to their persecution from the Jewish Leaders.

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the "Church", he was not writing to a building address but to the group of believers.

The Amish do not say they are going to Church, but say they are "Going to meeting."

Over time people began to refer to the actual building as a church. The early church buildings were made of stone or wood.

The early Christian church did not have a name. The first followers of Jesus are described variously in the New Testament as "disciples," "churches," "congregations," "churches of Christ," "churches of God," "believers," and "the way."

When was the early church persecuted?

The answer really depends upon what you mean by "church". If by this you mean the belief organized around the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, then the answer would be his fellow Jews with the popular backing of the Roman Government. If you you mean the Catholic Church then the answer is pretty much everybody, but only because the date of the founding of the church as an organization is not clear. However if you take the teachings of the bible in it's most literal interpretation and organized belief of the One God as the meaning of "church" then Cain was the first to persecute the faithful of God for the manner in which his brother Able worshiped.
