The revolving turret was protected by 8 in. of iron armor. The sides were covered by iron plates from 3 to 5 in. thick, with about 27 in. of wood backing, and the deck, only 18 in. above water, was shielded with 1-in. armor.

The USS Merrimac(k) was salvaged by the Confederate Navy and plated with iron (iron clad) and commissioned as the CSS Virginia. The Monitor and the Virginia went at it in the Battle of Hampton Roads. This went down in history as the first battle between two ironclads.
