Most laptop computers have a jack somewhere that will allow a standard computer monitor cable to be connected. Sometimes they are hidden behind panels that flip up, slide, or otherwise can be opened. If you have the manual, it will give the exact location of the jack, as well as describing the resolution and color selections possible.

Most laptops come with a standard adapters for an additional external monitor... You can also buy them from third party vendors or original replacement parts. Macintosh laptops auto detect displays and have a control panel in the system preference pane to either make the second monitor a mirror of the built in screen or an added screen typically to the left or right of your active monitor New ones have HDMI outputs with adaptors for HD, S-VHS, or NTSC television (RCA type cable)

Step 1: Check to see if the external monitor uses a VGA cable, a DVI cable, or an S-Video cable. Look on the side of your laptop's case to see if it has a corresponding cable port. Purchase a conversion unit, such as a VGA to DVI converter, if your laptop does not have already have the correct cable port.

Step 2: Attach the female end of the conversion unit to the male end of the monitor's cable. Plug the male end of the conversion unit into the female port on the side of your laptop. Connect the male end of the monitor's cable directly into the port on the laptop if you don't need to use a separate conversion unit. Step 3: Wait for the image of your laptop's desktop to appear on the external monitor. Click on the "Install New Hardware" button if your operating system brings up a new window asking you to install the latest driver for the external monitor. Follow the installation instructions and wait for the desktop to appear on the new monitor.

Step 4: Read through the manual that came with your laptop or navigate to the manufacturer's support website to find out which keyboard keys to press to toggle between the two displays. Try the standard combination of the "FN" and "F3" keyboard keys or the "FN" and "F9" keyboard keys if you can't locate the specific directions for your model of laptop. Step 5: Press the toggle key combination once to switch the display solely to the external monitor. Press it again to switch to Stretch Mode which will display the entire image across both monitors. Press the combination another time to display the same image in both monitors without using the stretch feature. Press the combination a final time to switch back to only viewing images on the laptop's built-in LCD screen.

Step 1

Plug in the first monitor into the power outlet. Connect the VGA cable from the monitor to the VGA input on the laptop.

Step 2

Power on the VGA monitor. Enter the system configuration preferences. On a PC, enter the system preferences by clicking the Start button, then "Control Panel" and "Display." On a Mac, enter by clicking the apple icon. Once in the display settings screen, click "Detect" to have the laptop find the first external monitor.

Step 3

Power off the second monitor. Connect the monitor to the computer through an available HDMI port. Power on the monitor. Enter the display preferences panel and detect the second external monitor.

Step 4

Connect the second monitor to a USB slot, if no HDMI slot is available. Repeat the process of entering the display preferences screen to detect the monitor.

Step 5

Install an extra monitor PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) card into a free PCMCIA slot on your computer. Power off the monitor, connect to the card and turn the computer on again. Detect the external monitor through the display program.

Step 6

Connect a dual monitor expansion box to a USB port on your laptop. Install any additional software as required by the manufacturer. Connect the two external monitors to the expansion box and turn on the power. Run through the device detection, if needed, to have your laptop locate the external displays.
