read this diagram that i got from the book and it will tell u how to get it to workRemoval & InstallationFig. Steering column and related components-1998-2004
NOTE
Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module.
NOTE
The rotation of the spiral cable is limited. If the steering gear must be removed position the front wheels in the straight ahead position. Do not rotate the steering column while the steering gear is removed from the vehicle.
NOTE
Remove the steering wheel before removing the steering column lower joint to avoid damaging the SRS spiral cable.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
- Remove the driver-s side air bag module. Remove the steering wheel.
- Remove the steering column covers.
- Remove the lower instrument panel. Disconnect the security lamp indicator.
- Disconnect the combination switch electrical connectors and the air bag harness connector.
- Remove the knee protector, if equipped.
- Disconnect the ignition switch and the shift lock solenoid connectors.
- Disconnect the shift cable.
- Remove the bolt from the lower joint.
- Remove the two steering column bolts and remove the steering column from the vehicle.

To install:
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
- Be sure the front wheels are in the straight position.
- Be sure to align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.
NOTE
The neutral position is detected by turning to the left 2.5 revolutions from the right end position and ending with the knob at the top. The spiral cable may snap due to steering operation if the cable is installed incorrectly. Also, with the steering linkage disconnected the cable may snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited number of turns (2.5 from the neutral position to both the left and right).
- When reinstalling the air bag module, be sure to use new bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs.
- Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON and make sure that the air bag warning lamp blinks.
- Check the tilt device and its operational range.

- Check the full left and right steering wheel turning diameter. Be sure the wheel turns smoothly.

NOTE
Before servicing, or working around, the SRS system, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes. When servicing, or working around, the SRS system do not work directly in front of the air bag module.
NOTE
Do not move the steering gear while the steering column is removed from the vehicle.
- Remove the spiral cable and the combination switches.
- Remove the lower instrument panel trim.
- Remove the steering column cover and ignition key finisher.
- Remove the lower knee protector.
- Remove the locknut and bolt from the upper joint, then separate the upper joint from the upper shaft. Discard the locknut, do not reuse.
- Remove the three nuts and bolt from the steering column assembly, then remove the steering column assembly from the steering member.
- Remove the hole cover seal and clamp.
- Remove the hole cover nuts, then remove the hole cover from the dash panel.
- Remove the bolt from the lower joint of the lower joint shaft, then remove the lower joint shaft from the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the lower joint.
- Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

To install:
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
NOTE
When installing the steering column, finger tighten all of the lower bracket and joint bolts; then tighten them to specification. Do not apply undue stress to the steering column.
- With the wheels in the straight ahead position, align the slit of the lower joint with the projection on the dust cover. Insert the joint until surface -A- contacts surface -B-.
