Generally, and this varies kanton to kanton (area to area), you need to be resident in the country for 12 years, have a permanent residency permit (C), speak the local language fluently and have a good knowledge of Swiss history. Plus there's a large charge which of Sfr. 20'000 or more, again depending upon your place of residency. Given all that, there's still no guarantee even if you were born in Switzerland to foreign parents (like my sons who are still solely British). Marrying someone of Swiss nationality greatly helps!
