Hematomas (bruises) occur when blood from damaged blood vessels and capillaries seeps into the surrounding tissue. Since there is no place for it to go, it stays there until it is absorbed back into the body.
The severity of a hematoma can often be reduced by application of a cold compress to the wound site for five minutes on, five off. If done quickly enough, this can reduce the seepage and the size of the bruise. Once formed, application of alternating heat and cold can sometimes be helpful, but there will always be some bruising, that will disappear over a period of several days.
Note: in applying cold, always wrap the ice or other cold material in a couple of layers of cloth. With the circulation in the area already impaired, you can give yourself frostbite with too much cold for too long.
