Lock your hubs and put the car in neutral, then push the 4X4 button, same thing with low range
Are you in neutral ? No in reverse.
Drop down to lower gear G2 or 3 and then press 4x4 button
To engage the wheel for 4x4 operation, the selector should be set to the "Lock" position.j3h.
turn on the engine, shift into neutral, engage the 4x4, shift into drive.
You pull handle back into 4wd.
To engage the 4x4 manually (VTM-4), you would need to be in 1st, 2nd, or reverse gear. In those gears and while stopped, you can then press the VTM-4 button, and will engage 4x4. It will only be engaged when around 18mph or lower. Above that, and it will disengage. It will re-engage when it dips down to that speed again. To turn it off, you can just press the button, or shift to a higher gear Keep in mind that even with the button off, VTM-4 will engage occasionally when there's slippage.
check the vacume lines that go to the front dif
Check for broken vacuum lines to the front axle shifter.

This vehicle is an on-demand "All Wheel Drive" 4X4 - meaning that the on-board computer senses when the 4X4 function is necessary and automatically shifts into it, and out of it. You cannot manually engage it by yourself, at will.
You need to check fuse 17 and 18 under the hood. One of them is bad.
If they are vacuum operated then it could be the hubs.
